The power of Affirmations

Affirmations. I feel like we have all at some point heard of them. But what actually are they and what is the point in doing them?

Affirmations in simple terms are short powerful phrases that reflect the reality you want to create. They are a way of changing and shaping someone's mindset as they help to reprogramme the subconscious mind, boost self-esteem and confidence, reduce stress and anxiety and help to reach goals.

You don't  just have to take my word from though, as there is actual science behind it. Affirmations tap into the brains neuroplasticity which is the ability to recognise itself by forming new neural connections. When you repeat affirming statements, especially when connected with visualisation and emotion you will start to form new thought patterns.

Furthermore, self-affirmation activates the reward centres of the brain, much like when you receive something enjoyable or receive praise. As a result over time this practice can shape and change our mindsets completely.

So how do we create effective affirmations?

The first and most important thing to know and understand is that affirmations have got to be positive you are physically saying words , which have power, so make sure they aren't negative. The next thing is to practice saying them in the present tense as if it is already true. Don't say ' I will  be confident' for example, say: 'I am confident'. Make the affirmations personal. Make sure that they resonate with your values, goals and beliefs. Lastly, stay consistent! Repetition of saying  them daily out loud multiple times a day is crucial for obtaining that mindset shift.

There are multiple ways we can write and say our affirmations to make them stick. For example, anyone who has been in my room at Uni has seen one of my most powerful affirmations written on my wall/mirror. Now not only has this been effective as I am constantly seeing it and walking past it but also those who come into my room have always seen it and said it to themselves as well. Having affirmations physically placed on something you will see every day whether that be your mirror or workspace is a really good way of reminding yourself of them. Moreover, another thing I know people do is writing down their affirmations in a journal and going back to them every evening/morning.

While, yes it may seem silly and a bit awkward at first repeating phrases to yourself over and over I can almost guarantee you that over time you will start to see a difference to your mindset. When you align your words with your beliefs and actions, you start to attract many more opportunities and experiences.

Love always,
