Breaking down the Father, Son and Holy spirit

I have had many conversations over the past few weeks with people in my life who are not Christians but who want to understand the Trinity and what exactly it means and  equally I have had conversations with fellow Christians who have shared with me their view on how they understand the Trinity. Some of which gave me the water analogy in which, just like there are different forms of water there are different forms of God. Similarly, someone else compared it to us and the idea of the  mind, body and spirit which is what makes us ,us. Or even I heard someone use an analogy of an apple and the idea that you have the skin of the apple, the seeds and the centre of the apple. Ultimately there are different ways people describe and understand  the Holy Trinity and I want to share what I understand and have learnt about it, in hopefully the most simplistic way to help anyone, whether you are a devotional Christian, a non-believer or someone exploring Christianity and faith to get a better understanding and grasp of the Holy Trinity.

The Holy Trinity is a core Christian doctrine stating that God exists as one being in three, Co equal, Co eternal and co substantial persons; The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. To be Co equal is to understand that each persons of the trinity is fully God, it is not a piece of God, all persons are all fully God possessing the same attributes and nature. To be Co-eternal is to understand that they have always existed and will always exist as one together. To be Co-substantial is to understand that while they are one in essence they all have different roles and functions in Gods relationship with humanity. For example, The Father is seen as a source and creator and the one who begets the son. The Son is the word made to flesh, Jesus, and whom physically came to earth as a human being in the form of Jesus Christ. The Holy spirit is the bond of love between the Father and the Son who inspires and empowers believers. It is important to remember that the Trinity is not a split personality but is One God set in Unity; it is the relational reality where three distinct persons are God.

We may never fully grasp this idea but it is the core belief of Christianity and Breaking down the trinity is the ultimate way in allowing us to see God, understand God and be in a relationship with him. After all he is a relational God ,one who loves us. I am going to try and break down the Trinity to understand better what these different roles and functions are.

The Father

The father is probably the most understood by people out of the three in the Trinity as he is the originate source and the first principle of life. He is the creator and the substainer of absolutely everything. He is the one who begets the Son and breathes the Holy Spirit.

The best way that I have viewed the Father is to view him like a dad, and this is something which I have only recently started to do but has helped me build a stronger relationship and understanding of who he is. As a child we would know  that our Dads would provide for us and protect us and that same feeling is still there even as we grow up and in the same way The Father provides for us. Now this is not necessarily with materialistic things but instead through peace and security. No matter what The Father, Our Father, will be there for you to support you. No matter what.

Jesus

Jesus is the human form of who God is and his character and heart. I have always viewed Jesus in a best friend kind of way, one who will always walk beside me and offer me the ultimate friendship. But he is also a physical representation and role model to sons and daughters of God.

Jesus teaches us love and compassion by striving to love others, even those who are difficult and show compassion to those in need. Jesus teaches humility by avoiding pride and arrogance and instead be humble and serve others. Physically Jesus shows us forgiveness and to seek forgiveness from others and let go of grudges.  He teaches us to practice kindness and generosity in our interactions with others and He teaches us to find opportunities to help and serve others, mirroring Jesus's selfless servants and to be a light as Jesus is a light.

We should let our actions and words reflect the light of Jesus , inspiring others to follow him. Sharing your faith and the good news of Jesus with others is inviting them to know him as well.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy spirit is the very thing that brings us peace and comfort and dwells in our hearts, in our souls. The Holy Spirit is how miracles happen and brings healing, wisdom and  interestingly creativity. Subsequently, the Holy Spirit challenges us. You know when you get that physical feeling in your gut to do something whether that is being brave in a moment and talking about an experience you have had or whether it is following your dreams that  God has planted in your heart, the Holy Spirit will challenge us by pushing us and holding us accountable for it.

The Holy Spirit is Gods active presence in the world; guiding ,empowering and transforming believers, ultimately leading them to a deeper relationship with God and Christ. The Holy Spirit also reveals things to us which can help lead us to repentance, bringing conviction and transformation to us.

In a way the Holy Spirit is like our counsellor who has so much love for us and intercedes for believer's, praying on their behalf especially in times of need. Ensuring their prayers are heard and answered. Not only this but the Holy Spirit will show us what we need to pray for at times through visions, dreams or even in random moments. The Holy spirit revels the truth through the words of knowledge and wisdom and helps us when it comes to approaching conflict or in showing up for someone in the best way we can.

In difficult times the Holy Spirit reminds believers of Gods love and presence bringing comfort and hope and is the very thing that produces the fruit of the spirit of the believers lives including love and faithfulness. Moreover, The Holy Spirit plays a huge role in Unity and fellowship by uniting believers in Christ and fostering a sense of community in church as well as with relationships with others.

In conclusion

The Holy Trinity is complicated and it is okay to accept that we won't ever be able to fully wrap our minds around how the Trinity is what it is, however, understanding what each part of the Trinity is and their specific role is vital in fostering a deep relationship with  God and for your walk with faith.

Love always,
