Slow down Kid
I recently listened to the song ‘Vienna’ by Billy Joel and wowww did the lyrics hit home. For those of you who have never heard of it before the song starts off saying; “Slow down you crazy child, you’re so ambitious for a juvenile, but then if you’re so smart, then tell me, why are you still so afraid?”
I mean wow come on you cannot tell me those first few lyrics didn’t hit home for you. As a girl trying to conquer the beginning of her early twenties these lyrics really made me sit and stare at a wall for a good 20 minutes.
Why you ask? Because it made me realise that I needed to stop being so afraid. Afraid I’m making the wrong decisions. Afraid I’m surrounding myself with the wrong people or getting myself in sh*t tons of debt at Uni and not have the career I dreamed of after it. Or I’m Afraid I’m going to mess something up and it have this disastrous detrimental impact on the rest of my life (dramatic I know). But I guess you could say I realised I was afraid of life itself in a way.
And when good old Billy Joel reminded me and all of us to just ‘slow down’ and be smarter but less afraid it really brought this great sense of reassurance to me and acted as a great reminder that sometimes I need to just let go and trust myself and God. I need to start going about things courageously without fear being a factor. Which is harder said then done I know trust me, however Billy is right in the sense that we need to be able to trust ourselves and our abilities and not let our emotions, that being fear, get in the way or stop us from achieving and doing all we were meant to do.
“Slow down, you’re doing fine, you can’t be everything you wanna be before your time”
Chills. Those few simple verses are just perfection. They bring such an important and comforting reminder to us all when we go about our day to day lives trying to achieve everything and be everything we want to be straight away. Constantly seeking more and wanting more for ourselves, but it is so so important to just to stop. Breathe. Slow down! Because I hate to break it to you, but we are not made to be everything we wanna be before our time (like how I incorporated the lyrics there) we are made to live. Breathe. Experience all that life has to offer without the constant need to become this person or that person. Simple being you, being human it’s enough. Be grateful for all you have in your life, all the blessings you have and accept that we aren’t going to achieve and be everything we want to be in this lifetime . However, we will always have everything we NEED in life and that is the most important and valuable thing to remember.
“Why don’t you realize Vienna waits for you?”
The very last lyrics of this beautiful song and the weirdly most comforting of them all. It serves as this great reminder to us all to slow down and go easy on ourselves. Its this soothing reminder that our life is long and its okay not to have it all figured out. I don’t know why but our late teens and early 20’s tend to feel like the end of the world, there’s this huge pressure to have it all figured out. ‘Vienna’ serves as a great reminder that this is not true and in fact, we will all be okay in the end.
And that is why this song will forever be one of my favourites and I hope you can get as much comfort and reassurance from it as I do.
Love always,
Ruby xo
